How Long Should You Burn a Soy Candle? A Lesson from a Loyal Customer

One of our longtime customers, Miguel, stopped by recently with a concern — his candle tin was getting really hot after burning for several hours. When I asked how long he'd been letting it burn, he said he just lets it go… for hours.
Sound familiar? You light a candle, love the scent, and before you know it, half the day has passed. We get it. But burning a soy candle for too long can actually work against you — and against your candle.
Here's what I shared with Miguel, and what every candle lover should know.
Why Burn Time Matters

Soy wax is one of the safest candle materials available — it burns slower and cooler than paraffin, which is one of the reasons we use it in every You Me & Emilio candle. But even soy candles have limits. Burning a candle for too long can lead to:
- An overheated tin or vessel — exactly what Miguel experienced. The metal or glass gets dangerously hot to the touch.
- Soot buildup — a long-burning wick can mushroom and produce black soot that deposits on the jar and in the air.
- Faster wax consumption — the candle burns through wax more quickly than it should, shortening its overall life.
- Increased fire risk — while soy wax burns slowly and is far less likely to cause a fire than other waxes, an overheated vessel near flammable surfaces is still a hazard worth avoiding.
Our Recommended Burn Times by Size

To get the most out of your candle — and keep your space safe — follow these simple guidelines:
- Medium & Large candles: Burn for 2 to 5 hours at a time.
- Extra Large candles: Burn for 4 to 5 hours at a time.
After each burn session, let the candle cool completely before relighting. This protects the vessel, preserves the wax pool, and extends the life of your candle significantly.
The First Burn Is the Most Important

Here's a pro tip: the very first time you light your candle, let it burn long enough for the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the jar. This prevents "tunneling" — where the candle burns straight down the middle and wastes all that beautiful wax on the sides. For most of our candles, that first burn should be at least 2 hours.
Signs You've Burned Too Long

Watch for these warning signs that it's time to extinguish your candle:
- The tin or jar feels very hot to the touch
- The flame is flickering excessively or growing taller than usual
- You notice black soot forming on the inside of the jar
- The wick tip has mushroomed or curled
Why We Love Soy Wax
Soy wax is plant-based, biodegradable, and burns cleaner than paraffin — meaning fewer toxins in your air and a longer-lasting candle overall. It's one of the reasons every You Me & Emilio candle is hand-poured with 100% soy wax. We want your home to smell amazing and stay safe.
